Overview
Safari Ostrich Farm: Interactive Ostrich Experience
Safari Ostrich Farm operates as a working ostrich farm near Oudtshoorn on the Garden Route. We offer South Africa’s only Ostrich Tractor Safari, delivering an up-close, hands-on encounter with the world’s largest bird. Located about 6 km from Oudtshoorn’s center, you’ll learn something new with every visit.
Our tractor safari winds through the farm to view Kenyan Masai ostriches, Zimbabwean Blues, and South African ostriches. You can enter the chick-rearing compartment and watch chicks develop through their stages. We also house the beautiful and rare White Ostrich.
The Farm and Breeding
Derek Fisch and Harry Lipschitz founded the farm in 1956; both are fourth-generation ostrich farmers. We farm ostriches extensively for meat, leather, and feathers, and operate as a commercial breeding facility with birds at all growth stages.
Our 1,800-hectare property groups ostriches by age in camps. We select special breeding birds and place them together to mate and lay eggs. Our breeding flock includes 280 birds, about 60% female and 40% male. The breeding season runs from winter through summer (June to February). During this season, you’ll witness ostrich chicks hatch in our incubators, which we manage to optimize results. Our incubators hold up to 3,000 eggs at once.
Feather Palace
Feather Palace is a sandstone homestead dating to the early days of the ostrich industry. Built in 1910, it reflects a era when farmers raised ostriches primarily for feathers. Safari Ostrich Farm owns this historic landmark, a symbol of our origins and ongoing story.
